Mugging

I know I'll probably lose this feeling once this is all over, so shall just take some time to pen this down. I actually like the common tests. Or least the hols that lead up to it. Or maybe it's just this hols. For the first time my hols could actually be considered to be occupied, so no matter how I tried or didn't try, I couldn't waste it away. I didn't waste it away. That much I suppose will never change and I can take solace in.

But it's been a pretty nice hols. Last one that I'll ever have, that's it, the world's going to be a different place from now on. lol. The year's half gone, there's still half left so it's not quite the time to get all nostalgic about things. But still, this hols has been different in other ways. The change of environment from school to a whole month of something different, even if it was more stressful still somehow seemed to provide a mental retreat, to get away from it all. Very strange but somehow it seems less hectic, though my time's more stretched and there's less time to just waste away.

Suddenly I'm dreaming of simpler pleasures again. Of doing what I really want to do. Of seizing the freedom that comes with post exam to do the things I'm missing out now. Even though it's a dream, it's still a nice feeling, knowing of a bliss within reach. But yet I know that when school reopens, somehow one way or another I lose sight of all these, distracted by all the noise that fills my world again.

Sigh.

Time out..

rawr.. chem is driving me nuts.. stupid 2003 paper. I'm supposed to know what an ethanedioate ion is? Correct me if I'm wrong please, cause for some reason it sounds damn familiar.. dammit. And the stupid fixing tarnished silver question. Dammit... I bet you it won't work lorh.. the notes like say dunno how many million times aluminium got some super solid oxide layer... rawr rawr rawr.... fine.. I'm probably supposed to assume since there's nth else I can do. Oh what the heck, probably just shows that I need more practise.

ok, finished 发泄-ing, can go back to mugging already. 1 week left to the very last common test. The last one that you can still afford to play with it, just be careful don't get into remedial can liao.. sigh. oh yes, here's a quote from a tagboard.

"Gentleman - what the girls want.
Ladies - what most of them aren't."
Hmm...

The news today

Ah, after one week of barely touching the papers, couldn't help but find today's papers all so terribly interesting. So interesting that I'm taking time off mugging just to blog about it. Hmm.. let's see.. where to begin...

Right. The Life! section then, where all the fun and laughter is. There on the first page is the latest mega arts structure to receive criticism from the rest of the world. No wonder they call them critics, not in their country also must say. Or maybe it's the other way round, that they're just living up to their name. Hmm.. oh well, whatever the case, it works well to keep me entertained. But what really caught my eye was this dome shape thingy they call The Egg. Officially it's called the National Grand Theatre but I suppose like every other art structure they build, they must criticise and they must give nicknames, a la The Durian. Well, turns out it's true, as there was a nice 4 page report on the other arty structures and their various receptions and names.. ranging from Lightning to Wave and what have you... or not.

So yes, what was it exactly about this egg from China that caught my eye? Check out these pictures. Presenting... The Egg!

and a blurred version from a different angle, with a change in lighting?

Or rather, a gausian blurred, with a greyish photo filter applied and cloned-flipped vertically down superimposed on the original + rippled version of.... this!

Tadah! No offense really, I don't hate it, and I'm not trying to imply that it's a copycat design or anything. I mean, one's spiky, the other's round; one's on it's own, the other has another half, and of course, one's by a river and the other has it's very own lake! Just terribly amused at the similarity of the criticism both received and how the lighting, shape and size of the 2 original images seemed to share similarities and appeared within inches of each other, as seen in the original here.

Maybe one day it will become well loved after all. Seems that even the famous Eiffel Tower was criticised in similar fashion in it's time. Oh, and speaking of mega structures and the French, ah.. the good ol' French... right, just got reminded of the joke about the whole Freedom Fries thingy in the US. I mean, what's the whole point of doing all this when yer grand ol' lady, pride of the free states, who still stands tall and sayth "Give me your tired, your poor, your hurdled masses..." was French! Ah yes, the beauty of the US indeed.

(Disclaimer: All sources of the original images come from The Straits Times, Saturday, 16th of June 2007 edition, Life! section page 5)
Yikes! It's late, gotta go finish chem before continuing with the rest of the stuff in the papers.

SGH - Art Club CIP: Quilling!

Hmm.. Imagine this scenario.

You see a sign which says "Please take one".
It's a small sign, about the size of a credit card or slightly bigger.
There's a small triangle at the bottom that looks something like this |>
Next to the card, in the direction that the triangle arrow points, there's a stack of papers.

What do you do?

Those who say take the card, slap yourselves please.

Rawr.. I'm not kidding, people actually tried taking the card. Sigh.. Yep, it happened during the SGH Art Fest. Ok lah, I admit the sign very nice, quite cute with the arrow made by quilling. But please, leave the sign alone! Argh, the first situation nearly blew my mind apart. They removed the sign already lah, it was only after I coincidentally had to take an infosheet from the stack that they realised the sign was referring to the stack of papers there...

Well, somehow the sign still mysteriously disappeared in the end...<>.<>So we made a new one. Calvin drew and I made the quilled arrow lol.. and this time I made sure to include a s scroll tail that looks like this "~" so that it looks more like an arrow in case er.. triangular arrows too abstract for them already. So together it basically looked like this ~|> Pity didn't take a picture though, it really looked quite nice heh.

But apparently our efforts were either not good enough or too good already. Someone was busy fiddling with the sign looking all curious about whether s/he (can't remember) could take it or not. Ok lah, I concede that at that point we ran out of infosheets there already but still.. Next time should add one more line: "Psst.. we don't mean this sign ;)"

And since I'm on the topic of the art fest, must, as usual, complain!! Rawr.. It's so unfair, both SGH and Tan Tock Seng were having art fest at the same time and somehow only the TTSH one got media exposure. Hmph.

Oh yes, and I also learnt many valuable lessons.
1. Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for life. But many people rather take the fish.
2. Groups of girls are better at approaching people than groups of guys. Fine, we too intimidating. Whatever. All you feminists out there, shuddup.
3. Kids attract kids. Once you have enough, they keep coming and you become a childcare centre.
4. 3 consecutive days of chicken rice is bad. Very bad.
5. I sure got a lot to say eh? Lol.

Well, the art week is over, and for those who're wondering wth is quilling, check out the infosheet here *Click*. Yea, I thank Yi Wen for the nice drawings which I koped and edited (some). P/S The strips of paper used for quilling are most preferably obtained by putting paper through a shredder. and yay, finally gotten a favicon for the blog!

Have a heart, donate blood!

Ok fine, so this year's official tag line for blood donor day is "Safe blood for safe motherhood", but I think that one's nicer. So yesterday was world blood donor day and since the bloodbank and red cross was so nice as to give a couple of movie premiums like very nice coupons for $5 tickets to Ocean's 13 and Legend of the Sea(which I most gladly used, no prizes for guessing which one I watched though lol.) I shall be nice and do some advertising!

Yesh, donating blood is good. It saves lives - up to 3 to be more precise. And it's not pain(though I fear the stupid needle) - probably less pain than NS med check up lorh(which I concede I haven't went for).

And for those who need more encouragement, here's another 4.
.
1. It's free.
.
2. You get nice refreshments after that, and no, they're not lousy biscuits, I think there was Oreo.
.
3. It'll temporarily make you about FIVE HUNDRED grams lighter in like 15 minutes, better than most weight-loss programmes out there. (No, you will not gain back more than your original weight once your blood has been replenished, any weight gain is probably due to over snacking on the refreshments, in which case, tsk.)
.
4. You get nice stuff on World Blood Donor Day. Yay!

So visit http://www.hsa.gov.sg/html/consumer/donorcare.html today!

The Physics Chemistry Relationship relationship.

Nope, there's no typo. Was talking to jere when suddenly thought of this crap so oh well, here it is.

Relationship theory says that opposites attract.
But is this true?

Einstein's theory of special relativity says that there is conservation of mass-energy.
Chemistry says equations must balance.

Thus we try:
0e + 1H+ --> 1H
-1__ 0______ 1

Yep, electron + proton works out fine, everyone lives happily ever after.. the end? Nope, let's see what happens when electron here meets his real opposite.

0e + 0e --> Annihalation
-1_ +1

And they don't live happily ever after... save for the 2 gamma rays that are emitted. Sigh.. Talk about no chemistry... Ok, that's about as crappy as a day I've had, so screw it, I shall go mug chem now.

(P/S Don't ask me about where the negative signs for the charge goes.. haven't quite gotten that but guess it's not that impt oh well..)

Hot? You call that hot?

Sigh, have such a huge back log of blog posts that I want to make but couldn't bring myself to clear, but before I got around to that, I saw this in today's edition of Today.

Er.. hii.. may I take your attention off the guy please? Hey.. Right, that's better. Well nope, my title ain't talking about the guy there so you can put that knife down now. =D May I draw your attention to this paragraph instead.

28 degrees Celsius and it's "sweltering"? I'll quote Jack Sparrow on this. "Clearly, you've never been to Singapore."

On another note, I'm finally getting around to finishing the new template... the dot has now evolved into something more! *gasp* and yesh, my trademark, though grammatically disputed quote is back! wahahaha... now maybe another month more and I'll get around to doing the side pane lol.. >.<

The memories

It's been a long time since I last dropped by this place. So many things have happened that I just need to pen down so I don't forget. After all, things can change but the memories are for keeping as long as you can remember. So rewind back to what's probably been the best day of the year so far; rewind to the second last day of the second last week of May and the last week of the second term of the second year of JC. Ok, basically 24th May 2007, Thursday.

The weeks leading up to that day were terribly hectic. The sports season was reaching it's climax and the school was generally a buzz with many finals going on. For 5 of us though, namely Lock, Mervin, Miki, Wen Hao and I, it was a competition of another kind. Haha, kk, enough drama, it was the RJC-EDB Entrepreneurial Competition. We somehow managed to get past the first round despite our er... 4 day old concept and were piah-ing like shit to win something in the finals. At first there were 20 teams then 8 pulled out. Then 4 got into the finals and there were 3 prizes up for grabs and after coming so far you just want to win something.. and that brings me back to that fateful day. Turns out there was an RGS team too which dunno why was there and dunno how come was allowed to win third despite exceeding the initial budget of 10k by like a thousand times?

Still remember the shock and surprise we felt, the competition was very tough and we expected the rg team to just die cause they exceeded the budget and their percentage returns was crap..(Like invest 80 million for 5 years and make profits of 4 million a year<>.<>) So after the presentation, the P(we win smth) was about 0.8, but we didn't expect to encounter the P(we win smth rgs grp win third) which was like... 0.01? and we actually made it lol.

Maybe it wasn't that big a deal lah, but for a non-sports person like me, winning a trophy is like some rare event.. So yea, was terribly excited. Joke was that celebrations had to be held back cause the prize was due to come through giro or something... which I still haven't received =(

And another reason why it was a good day was cause we managed to catch the soccer finals held at the national stadium and we won too. Pretty significant really, it was one of the last few matches/events to be held at the Kallang National Stadium and it was the first time in 7 years or so that RJ won soccer. Final score was 1-0 with soccer powerhouse MJ as runners up. It was quite an impressionable moment if I may say, pity didn't have a picture of it.

We were trying to make our way to join the RJ supporters, choosing (fortunately) to take the long route and not cut through the MJ supporters when suddenly the ref. blew for full time. The contrast on the pitch was just astounding. You see MJ players just collapsing on the spot in disappointment and RJ players running high on adrenaline. The feeling from the sight was just weird.. so terribly mixed with empathy for both sides.

Well, more results came in during the post game and turns out that RJ won all the finals that day save for bowling boys. So everyone in class who had a competition that day won. And that feeling you get when everyone is happy for one reason or another.. just amazing. It's like for once you can be happy, be it for yourself or for others, and you can show it because everyone shares the joy with you. Simply wonderful.

Oh and in more firsts, we walked all the way from the stadium to Suntec City. That's like 3 MRT stops?! Talk about high/mad. But on a slightly darker note, I must confess that as much as I felt happy that they won, I didn't quite feel the euphoria that was in the air. Really strange, I don't quite get it. Then again, maybe I really do.
