Realisations

Today as I was on my way home I let my mind wander. And it suddenly hit me, that back in school the solution to almost everything was education. Almost, because no proposal is complete based on a single approach and a multiple approaches were always suggested to compensate for the downsides and shortfalls of other methods. It was all perfect, as our grades would tell us.

Take education as an example.

A:"How do you get kids to learn something?"
B:"Teach them."
A:"But just telling them the facts doesn't work and it's boring."
B:"Let them learn through self discovery."
A:"But how do we know that they've learnt?"
B:"Quiz them."

Seems good, until you see kids just scanning the lines for the relevant info to answer the quiz and learn nothing in the end.

And so it is, that the situation on the ground can be adversely different from the illustration in the plan. An experienced leader minimises this because he knows the ground. A good leader avoids this by learning from the ground.
